Background of the Study
Student identification and access management are critical elements of security in academic institutions. Traditionally, student ID systems have relied on physical cards or simple barcode scanners, but these methods can be easily compromised (Chen & Zhao, 2024). With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), universities can adopt more sophisticated, secure, and efficient identification systems. AI-based smart student ID systems offer enhanced security features such as facial recognition, biometric verification, and real-time access monitoring, making them more secure than traditional methods (Wu et al., 2023).
At Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State, the implementation of an AI-powered smart student ID system can streamline access control, reduce fraud, and ensure only authorized individuals can access sensitive areas. Moreover, AI can help monitor attendance and prevent identity theft, providing an additional layer of security within the campus. This study explores the design and implementation of such a system at the university to enhance campus security and improve administrative efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Wukari has faced challenges in managing campus security, particularly regarding unauthorized access to restricted areas. The traditional student ID system, which relies on physical cards, is prone to misuse, including identity theft and falsification of attendance records. This leads to security vulnerabilities and inefficient monitoring processes. An AI-based smart student ID system, capable of biometric identification and access management, could significantly improve security and streamline university administration.

Research Hypotheses
Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of AI-based systems in improving security and administrative efficiency in universities. The findings will inform future policies on campus security and offer a model for other institutions seeking to modernize their access management systems.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implementation and evaluation of the AI-based smart student ID system at Federal University, Wukari. It will not extend to other university campuses or external systems. The study will be limited to access control and identification, excluding other potential applications of AI in university administration.
Definitions of Terms
AI-Based Smart Student ID System: A system that uses artificial intelligence technologies, such as facial recognition or biometric scanning, for student identification and secure access management.
Biometric Verification: A process that uses physical characteristics, such as fingerprints or facial features, to verify an individual's identity.
Access Control: The process of restricting entry to certain areas or systems to authorized individuals only.
